Marco Werner at Historique Grand Prix in Monaco

An experience of a special kind was experienced by Audi legend Marco Werner. In Monaco Werner drove that Ferrari 312 from 1973, the Niki Lauda was driving at that time. After much anticipation of the historic event in Monaco, there was bad news for the 3-time Le Mans winner shortly before the event. After a test run and a subsequent oil analysis, it looked like an impending engine failure. Too many shares in the oil, indicating a possible damage of a camp.

But the Ferrari was named and was to be presented in Monaco. And so they decided to do a two rounds in practice. Werner was instructed not to turn so high and to protect the engine, always with an eye on temperatures and pressures of oil and water. Werner made his rounds in the first practice with the ex Niki Lauda Formula 1 and let it go smoothly. Caution was needed so that nothing happened to the engine. Turning the first few meters in Monaco with an unknown Formula One, though or perhaps because it is a high value historic vehicle, is not exactly the ideal conditions. Werner qualified for the 28th starting place of a total of 41 cars.

It started raining just before the second practice session. For some participants conditions to decide not to drive. Too high is the risk in the rain, especially in the guardrail channel of Monaco. But that came to Marco Werner. First, Werner is known as a rain specialist and second, it comes in the conditions contrary to the engine, that he is not exhausted in the rain.

Werner quickly felt comfortable with the conditions and his second contact with the car. Werner thrilled the audience with great drifts and drove the Ferrari despite a careful driving style on a great fourth place. After that, all were highly satisfied in the team. The car was still running like a Swiss clockwork, had remained completely and all were in fourth place more than satisfied and surprised. In the end car healed, driver slightly emotionally struck. Because Marco Werner had a few tears on his face after Qualifiying. One thought only tears of disappointment, because Werner could not really show what was possible. At full speed and engine power of the Ferrari! In the rain, he was able to show what would happen if you could go to the limits in the dry.

But Werner’s answer was different: “I quickly found a good rhythm in the rain with the car. It was great to drive, fun and really risk-free. If it looked a bit different from the outside, “grinned Werner. “And suddenly everything was so easy. Easy crossing in the rain, so good at the limit although I have not maxed out with the engine. Then this acoustics of the V12 engine. The sound in the tunnel. There were so many thoughts then what could have become anything, if I had got the real chance in a current Formula 1. That I drive here with the original car of Niki Lauda and and and …. As a kid, I’ve been devouring books about this era, and now I’m in the car in Monte Carlo at the wheel. Incredible. Then there were so many emotions that after tapping off the training a few tears came to me. ”

Werner was not so lucky in the chaos race. Due to broken down and crashed vehicles, the race was canceled in the first round and started again. Werner was able to work his way up from 18th place to 18th place when the brake pedal failed and he parked the Ferrari in the pits. “I do not take any risks with such a car. It’s really about nothing. And without brake it makes no sense here. I would have lost all positions too fast. So I brought the car back safely and everyone is happy. Even if we did not finish. It was an indescribably great experience for everyone. What more could you want? “Said Marco Werner after the race.
